Instructional Designer

The Instructional Designer will coordinate the instructional design and storyboarding of e-learning content. This position is responsible for developing and delivering quality content and informing projects from initiation through delivery to student. This position is also responsible for the lifecycle of academic content, ensuring quality development, a positive student experience with the content, and revision and review cycles for content. This position reports to the Editorial Manager in the Product Development department of Penn Foster and is located in Scranton, Pennsylvania.


  • Assist in the ADDIE content development process and work closely with Sr. Content Managers and production staff, while working with instructors, authors, and subject-matter experts as needed to ensure delivery of quality curriculum.
  • Maintain and improve instructional design templates and guidelines.
  • Manage course-level projects from start to finish including budget and timeline.
  • Hire and manage freelance authors and subject-matter experts to ensure creation, development, and instructional design of quality content.
  • Assist in managing and maintaining relationships with external vendors such as authors, subject-matter experts, instructional designers, and others.
  • Manage ADDIE content development process and work closely with instructors, authors, and subject-matter experts to ensure delivery of quality curriculum.
  • Work with Production Editors and Editorial Manager to ensure projects are completed on schedule and within budget.
  • Revise existing courses and programs based on student and instructor feedback, as well as developments in applicable vertical markets.
  • Research the performance of students enrolled in the program areas such as analyzing exam completion information, social media comments and questions, and completion rates to inform a revision.
  • Create and edit raw content, storyboards, and media assets and work with production team to ensure final delivery meets instructional design templates and guidelines.
  • Ensure new and revised content is tied to both program- and course-level outcomes, objectives, and assessments. Ensure all assessments are tied to course objectives and test to appropriate levels of Bloom’s taxonomy.
  • Understand various instructional design pedagogies including Bloom’s taxonomy, Universal Design for Learning, Gagné’s Nine Events of Instruction, and Adult Learning Theory.
  • Identify technology, features, and functions to enhance programs and courses.
  • Assist in improvement of department processes and act as a liaison between the Sr. Content Manager and the production staff.
  • Take ownership of all projects, and create and provide regular reports on the assigned workflow.



Education: Bachelor’s Degree required.

Experience: Minimum of 2 years’ instructional design or teaching experience required. 3–5 years’ experience preferred. Classroom or online teaching experience strongly preferred. Previous project management experience preferred. Experience with adult and nontraditional learners preferred. Graduate studies in Education or Instructional Design and copyediting experience a plus.

Computer Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office. Knowledge of instructional design software and content authoring tools, such as Lectora, Camtasia, or Captivate, required. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite preferred. Knowledge of learning management systems, Teamwork PM, and educational technology a plus.
